Default 1982 hood question

Would a 1982 hood work in trying to get a ram air type set-up? Did any body try it?

My 82 hood has a defective soleniod that right now holds the air dam in the open position. I'm getting cold air 100% of the time. I understand that the air dam is only supposed to open at wide open throttle. I dont notice any problems with it being open all the time and I may just remove it.

The hard part for you would be mating up to the hood opening with the 82 TBI shroud/air cleaner set-up.

Ive never seen anyone make this mod to a non CFI intake set-up. Maybe you could get ahold of an 82 CFI air cleaner shroud and mod it to fit your carb? It would be quite the conversation peice.

Dont know if the gain would be worth it though.

silver79, regarding MN-Brent's earlier post, sealing the carb to the hood's underside 'may' not be difficult. SUMMIT sells hood-scoop kits that seal the carb-to-scoop area. It's a piece of sheet aluminum with a hole cut to fit a carb, and a piece of 'sponge-like' material approx 2" wide x 5" tall x a few feet long. Lay the 'pan' on the carb, 'glue' the 'seal' on it's side along the edge of the pan, and 'trim' the seal for height against the hood. You could get 'crafty', and fabricate your own pan, matching the 'odd-shaped' opening under the '82 hood, out a piece of sheet aluminum. You'd have to use a low-rise element under your lid, but it should fit. Let us know what you decide, and how it works.

Remove the solenoid and door. mine was missing when I bought my 82 and it hasn't affected it that I can tell.....

I bet the opening in the bottom of the 82 hood would just about line up with one of those open top filter elements that K&N sells, and I wouldn't even try to seal it, just let it flow where it wants to.... better than nothing.

Terry 82
Do you have a pic of that set-up?

Was it difficult to find a housing to fit the throttle bodies?

MN-Brent. yes there are pics of my car with the twin air cleaners. posted on the cross-fire web site . i bought two 9 inch chrome air filter housing kits [chrome top and lower plate with air filter]from auto zone . throttle bodys are a oval shape the air filter base is round . i made a gasket to fit .the top mounting stud is off center so i bent metal into a z shape to move the stud to the middle of the chome top . it does look like dual carbs

Did exact same thing.

Also, with a dremel tool, opened up the underhood connection to what would have been the top of the air intake cleaner. Nice and oval, so feeds both tbi's right on top of each.

For base, I used a spare crossfire base and cut the unnecessary area away so I have a base that fits the round air filter but the base has the oval opening.

No pics.

I unbolted my flap and removed it. Was a little more cold natured, but once it warmed up, was more responsive. I sold it, and guy still driving w/o, guess it is still ok.

I have just removed the selenoid and door from the hood of my '82, also put in K&N filters.......haven't driven it yet since completing the work ( -42 this morning, still winter here) but everything I read tells me that it should run cooler and better because of the cool air and more of it..........the hood fits right tight on the opening in the top of the breather so it will be interesting.....I am told that I will have a noticably improvement in performance.......will et you know in a while......sigh
