hi
can someone help me identify transmission on my corvette , vet build date is October 19 (c19)from door tag ,transmission stamping is P9R11 so is October 11 1969 but there is no code for what type tranny I have M20-21-or 22,is there a way to tell without removing transmission from the car
thanks
What engine was the car originally equipped with? The base engines came with the M20 wide ratio in 69. The M22 was optional with other engine codes. Perhaps the answer is as simple as that
The “9” in the assembly code is for the model year of the car, not the calendar year that the transmission was assembled.
Because of the unique length of the 1969 Corvette model year, this code could be correct for a transmission built October 11, 1968 or October 11, 1969. The telling factor is the lack of a suffix character (A, B, or C) identifying the transmission as an M-20 (A), M-21 (B), or M-22 (C). These letters were used beginning in roughly November 1968. So the transmission in your car was built in 1968.
How does the VIN derivative compare with your car’s VIN? 5150 is a mid-October built car, so this transmission assembly date is VERY close to the assembly date of 1969 Corvette #05150.
the car vin is 194679S705159 and vin on trany is 19S705159 and P9R11 , build date from tag is C19
Im trying to find out what was the original engine to the car ,the trany look original, but someone did at some point replace engine to 350 from Chevelle
the car vin is 194679S705159 and vin on trany is 19S705159 and P9R11 , build date from tag is C19
My mistake on the VIN… 5159 is close enough and as you also posted the trim tag, October 19 (1968) on the car build is an eight day spread between the transmission assembly date and the car assembly.

What tachometer is in the car? Does it have A/C as original equipment?
also if I can't know what was the original engine can I put any engine from corvettes 1969- 350 or 427? . I would like to be as mach original as passable
thanks
thank you sir
I will check tomorrow as here in Poland is 11pm, also console plates is showing 350/350HP,so that what I was thinking ,it is L46 but since I did not see any B stamping on transmission I was sure it is not, but who knows
what else I need to check for ,
thank you, and thank you for your service
Does the tach work? Wouldn't the easiest way be to look at the tach? If you have the car running at 3000RPM in 3rd gear, shifting to 4th gear AND holding the same speed, would cause the engine RPMS to fall to 2027 with an M20 and 2343 with an M21.
hello Mr Stan
so I got the numbers from the differential ,
left side is; H 208
casting on the back; 3871375
numbers on the bottom; 2AO 10 4 68W
so from what I can fined the ratio is 3.70 so it is a M21 ,correct for a L46
please correct me if I'm wrong
here are the pics
I guess all I have to do is look for the correct engine to make it a L46
The “AO” broadcast code on your differential confirms that it is indeed, a 3.70 to 1 ratio. It also confirms that your car was originally equipped with a small block (350) engine as that code was only used for small blocks. Finally, the 3.70 to 1 ratio was not available with the wide ratio transmission, so by default, we can be pretty sure that it is a close ratio (M-21) transmission that was originally paired with a 350/350 (L-46) engine and a 3.70 to 1 ratio rear axle… That’s a really nice combination!
yes it helps a lot, thank you .now I will try to get in touch with previous owner to see if maybe he still have a original engine ,if not I will try to get a 3932386 block and 3927186 heads to build correct engine for L46 , best if I can fine a ce stamping on the block to be as close as number mach ,will let you know on progress
thank you again
with regards bogdan
