Default New Exhaust time ???'s

Where is a good place for an X pipe or crossover pipe on my 1971 350 4 speed non-removable cross member? I have headers installed instead of exhaust manifolds. I'm going to 2 1/2 inch pipes from the stock 2 inch that is on there now. New mufflers too and want a little more aggressive sound but not too loud as my car is a convertible. It has stock mufflers on it now.
I know I'll need the 2 1/2 inch center hanger too.
I'm taking it to my exhaust guy this afternoon to come up with a game plan.

Seems a little last minute to ask us for good ideas. Your exhaust guy should have the best solution he can handle. .

Ya, I know. Just got back into town and my exhaust guy is going on vacation for a week and today is the last day he'll be in town. I've been searching the archives and found so good info.

FWIW I have a 71 conv. also. for over 20yrs with the 454 I ran dynomax super turbos and if you are looking for something a little more aggressive than stock mufflers they sound pretty good. after I put the 496 is I went with 3" exhaust and ultra flow mufflers and it sounds incredible. if you have a 350 then this may not help all that much.

Kinda figured it was a 350 since you did mention you had a 2" exhaust but figured I would relate what I had used on my bbc's.

I have a 1968 Convertible with a high compression 427 and a 4 speed. The factory exhaust that came on the car was "too lame" sounding so I replaced it with a Chambered Exhaust from the now defunct Allen's Stainless Exhaust and I have been incredibly happy with the parts and especially the sounds.

The chambered exhaust's sound is similar to the side pipes. It can be made to be too loud or to sound like a factory sound system. Allen's offered the systems in three levels of noise, mine is the mid level. With a convertible you will not hear much from a chambered exhaust system unless you buy the noisiest exhaust and sit in traffic a lot. With my 427 the exhaust spits out of each side independently as I am not using an X pipe or crossover in the exhaust. The sound that comes out is very burbly and sounds awesome. I have never had any complaints about the level of engine music coming from the engine. I can actually carry on a conversation while driving my C3 on the highways or in the city streets without noise interrupting.

I have one of the Chambered Exhaust Systems on a fairly stock L98 (1988 C4) and even on that C4 it makes the Asian cars think twice before revving their little engines and trying to play with my C4. With the stock exhaust the little Asian cars would try and race me all the time, the sad part was that they were faster than my C4... At least my engine sounded respectable after the new exhaust was installed on a new High Flowing catalytic converter.

The entire Chambered exhaust system was lighter than the factory exhaust system and has lasted over 25 years on each of my Corvettes. I chose the Aluma-Steel option so I did not spend any extra for SS. My systems are both still functional after decades of usage. It is such a pity that we lost Allen's SS Exhaust because they made some great parts that can last.

Look at all the options and you should be able to find the right "sound" exhaust system for you and your Corvette. I was able to install both exhaust systems on the respective Corvettes in my driveway.

One question, Why do you want to put a "True Dual" exhaust system on a car and then put a crossover tube in the exhaust system which defeats the dual exhaust benefit. My 1968 came with dual exhaust, why would I need a crossover tube?

I would put the crossover wherever it makes the most sense from a packaging standpoint. The closer to the front would be my choice. This will smooth out some of the rhaspiness in the exhaust.

Aluminized looks great and lasts a LONG time. It welds easy too.
