AC question - Mufflers?
I'm rebuilding the AC on my 71 (along with numerous other things). It will include a Sanden 508 compressor, OE evaporator, late C3 fan with big impeller, OE condenser, late C3 accumulator and aftermarket dryer.
The similar setup on my Suburban includes a cylinder shaped "muffler" on the outlet side of the compressor. The questions is - What does this do and is this necessary on my application?

The muffler looking thing is just that..... a noise reducer from the factory to help quiet the compressor. It is not necessary and the system should be more efficient without it.

It's just the movements of the compressor that create enough sound that might warrant a noise reducer. People just don't like hearing the clatter of a compressor. If you are in doubt, go ahead and include it in the system. It will make it quieter. BTW, the Sanden is a very good compressor. I am relaying this info from my brother who works on auto AC. He knows his stuff. He says he has removed these mufflers with very little difference in sound but if you already have it, then go ahead and include it. I guess the bottom line to your question is that it's not necessary, but wouldn't hurt to have it.

The compressors are piston pumps, and you can get pulsating type noises transmitted into the pass compt. I would use one if you have room!
I've seen late model cars with noise concerns fixed by changing the compressor line asm with an updated part that has more than one muffler in it
