69 Differential Driving me insane

So bacically the stock 3.08 rear differential in my 1969 car needs a rebuild. I had a freshly rebuilt diff with the same gear ratio. The only difference is the rebuilt on is a HD unit out of a big block car. I installed the unit and everything bolted together no problem. I need to order the straps for the HD unit as mine were threaded and the HD one is thru bolted with U straps. I do not have the driveshaft or front support bracket oinstalled because its much easier to tighten the universal straps without the snubber or bracket in the way. Anyways I tried to rotate the rear wheels and they seem to bind and stop. The half shafts are installed. Any ideas? Do the half shaft universals have a certain direction when they get installed?

If the shafts are hanging down, they will bind when turning. If the diff binds with the shafts at ride height you have internal issues.

HD axles are tapped, standard axles use u-bolts.

The halfshafts will bind at full droop. You need to raise the trailing arms about an inch.

The only difference between a “HD” differential and a non-HD are the stubshafts. The HD shafts are threaded and the non-HD utilize the U-bolts.

Gonna lift the trailing arms up a little Tomorrow after work and see how it does. Hopefully I get the drive shaft u bolts in on Tuesday. So I can button it all back up.

Put the car on the ground and no binding. After I have been through with this car I get nervous. Thank you to all.

I think this is a good example of the value of using the correct length shocks,

Has nothing to do with shocks. Thankfully it all worked out.

Glad everything worked out. However shock length does mater. Using a shock that is longer than the stock 14.250 inches allows the suspension to travel too much causing the u joints to bind.
