Default 1979 fuse 16 keeps blowing

Hi,

I have a 1979 corvette. Fuse 16 blows the minute I replace it. There must be a short. How do I logically track it down? 16 has power antenna, curtesy lights, power door lock and alarm.

Thanks in advance!

Put a light bulb in place of the fuse using wire and alligator clips. Disconnect accessories one at a time starting furthest away from the fuse location. This idea from the electrical troubleshooting manual.

Until the light bulb goes out?

I have no idea how to disconnect the circuits. The wires are a rat's nest!

Does it have power antenna and did it work prior to this?
I've had bad antenna relays in 2 vettes that popped the fuses.
Access is behind the pass side carpeted console panel towards the rear.
3 screws buried in the carpet, center one beside the seat.
Pull the orange, yellow, black connector see if the fuse holds.

Default 79 corvette fuse 16 blowing

Yes the power antenna worked before all this started. I agree I think it’s the relay. The other thing I had problems with was the passenger side door power door lock. Some recently just fixed that as well. I’m gonna disconnect both power door locks if the antenna doesn’t fix it and see if that takes care of it. I don’t need power door locks! I wish I had manual windows and door locks.

Where exactly is it located??? I saw a you tube video that said it was under the arm rest and another that said it was in front of the middle storage box. I think I have an early 1979. I have 3 storage boxes.

Also, why can't I take both power connectors off the relay? Ove must come from the front, and the other must go to the antenna. I know there are 3 wires on the antenna. One constant 12 V, one ground and the last 12 V when the radio is turned on. If the antenna is blowing the fuse the problem could be the antenna motor, it's self as well.

Thanks

When I purchased my '78 in 1982 ( the car was from Florida) it did the same thing. My alarm horn had rusted enough to cause it to pop. I disconnected the horn under the hood , and everything else worked again. I then went to a junkyard and got another horn off a car and it is WAY louder than original, not stock , but it works for me.

On 79s the antenna relay is located under the center armrest all the way to the rear, passenger side.
My thought is antenna nylon lead broke causing the relay to overheat and burn up because antenna motor kept running.
Disconnect the power to the relay, yellow, orange, black first and see if that cures the fuse blowing.
If so, then unplug antenna lead from relay, green, white, grey and plug the power lead back in and see if the fuse holds.
Pretty sure the relay would be the problem if antenna related.

Saw your reply in other thread not the antenna.
Quick check of a bad alarm horn would be to simply unlock driver door with key. That would deactivate alarm horn.

You can but...
You have 2 different power sources to the antenna relay. Looking at the provided drawing above the Orange wire is powered by the same 20amp fuse CTSY/CLK/LTR/ANT. I would focus on that circuit...
The Yellow wire is a different circuit...

Yellow wire is the trigger from the radio to raise and lower it.
Orange is constant hot, how the antenna can retract when ignition is turned off.

Both the yellow and orange were connected to the antenna relay. I unclipped both connectors.

You're 2 days of posts into this problem You can't give up already!!!
There is a dead short in the Curtesy Circuit, remove all interior light bulbs including overhead...
If any of those are not the fault we will move on...

I'm posting 3 pages from the 79 Corvette Service Manual for you to printout and study...
Once you have completed any item on the drawing put a checkmark next to the item, it is just a reference mark to show you have looked and verified the item...
For now just focus on the Orange Wire Circuit #140. Any of those Orange wires are HOT at all times anytime the Battery is connected...
The 2nd line diagram is for a non delay interior lighting, the 3rd page is with delay lighting...
You take it to a specialist and they most likely will use the same troubleshooting method, except + or - $150.00 per hour shop rate...
