I got my hands on a good 400 block and would like to build a very strong 406 capable of handling lots of HP, TQ and nitrous.
If you know of a good build-up article I would love to hear about it.
Thanks.
Re: Anyone have a killer 406 build-up ? (John Dirks)
A few of us here have 400 block based engines. There was a post a few days ago that showed a link to a Chevy Magazine article about building a killer 9.7:1 406 with dart heads.
I have a 400 block, 375 CI Destroker in my 84 camaro.
The 406 build up would be about the same with a 3.75 crank, but you would need to size your crank, rod, pistons a bit different, probably stay with 6" rods for a street car.
400 block, .020 over (would make a 404 motor with stock crank)
3.48 forged Eagle crank.
Eagle 6.2 forged Hbeam rods
JE 12:1 pistons
Crower pn 350 cirlce track cam,
Pro Action 220, 66 cc CNC Aluminum Heads
Harland Sharp 1.5 roller rockers
Weiend Team G single plane Intake, pn 7530
BG Speed Demon 750 CFM carb
Hooker Super Comps
Canton Road Race pan, oil cooler
MSD pro billit dist, 6al box, MSD wires
9lb flywheel

PS My block has 2 bolt mains.
Several builders agreed that the 2 bolt main caps are wider and stronger then 350s and don't "Need" to be slayed unless you are going REALLY big
I'm not having any problems

The buildup post was mine, and though I deviated from the exact buildup,I can tell you it drives quite well, and when you plant your foot in it,it will scare you.The article claimed 455hp with iron heads,I'm guessing an easy 500hp with the AFR's.Check out my site.
Re: Anyone have a killer 406 build-up ? (Never Finished)
The carb was baught for the 355 and has never been altered from out of the box stock, excepting the tyewraps that disable the choke and secondary lockout.
It has 120,000+ miles on it and I'm planning on replacing it soon.Still gets 15 mpgs, but runs a bit rich and the choke doesn't work.

I saw a dyno test a week or so ago. It's going in a pickup destined for the Power Tour.
It's a 408" one, 10.4 compression, AFR 190 cc heads (lightly ported to 302 cfm) and a 240 something/110 LSA, .570 or so range lift solid roller. I didn't get exact specs. It was literally a cam laying around the shop and no one could remember what it was from. They had to use the Cam Doctor tool to figure out what it really was.
It idled great and pulled to 7200 rpm. It uses SCAT crank and some low $$ H beam rods I think.
The first test was with a lightly touched up Victor intake. Made 525 hp. Replaced it with a Victor E that had recieved some port work and a 2" spacer. made 562 hp!! That was with 1 3/4" pickup headers. They were really wanting some 1 7/8" ones and to replace the low $$ Moroso basic pan with something trick. Otherwise it was a very simple combination with no trick coatings or fancy stuff. Some parts juggling would have it all over 600 hp.
It's last version was running low 12's in a full size pickup with air. auto and 3.73 gears and flat tappet cam. It witnessed 150+ mph beside a LS1 Camaro a few years ago on the Power Tour. They are expecting high 11's this time and who knows what with the new T-350/Gear Vendors overdrive setup!
