'78 L48.. fan belts... bought all 3 new.. a/c belt touch to short @ 56 inches (can't even get it over tha clutch)... a/c belt touch to long @ 57 inches.. won't tighten good enough for me.. probably chunk it first time it gets hammered.. have been tryin' ta run down something in between with "0" luck.. tha big O has one says 56 1/2 on tha internet but on tha actual sleeve has length @ 56 1/8 inches.. still to short.. don't mind changin' crank pulley if need be.. as for as i know all tha pulleys are stock?.. anyone else had this problem..
On my AC belt I completely remove the adjuster bolt on the compressor, as opposed to just loosening it. This allows me to swing the compressor inwards a tad further than just having the bolt loose. Get the belt on, then reinstall the adjuster bolt.
If that still isn't enough. Remove the fan and loosen the water pump pulley. Get the belt into the groves and relighting fan and pulley. Then adjust compressor.
tried tha removin' tha " bolt.. no worky.. will try tha water pump thing later.. its nap time...................
thanks........ T
jus had an 'ole timer that works at O's part time call me.. say he has a Gates that will work.. says its GREEN and can vary in length justa tad.. says ya gotta measure any of 'em ta get a true length.. says tha factory measurements suck... go figure!

Yes, I just had this problem on my 1980 when replacing the compressor but it was the same when I replaced the belts a couple years ago . I did as Mr. 4-Vettes suggested. From what I remember having 3 late model C3's this was common.

I run a Gates 9555 Green Stripe XL belt for the AC compressor on my stock 1978 L48 (manual trans car, GM did not use an A.I.R. pump on 1978 L48/M20 cars). The spec on the 9555 belt is 56 inches. Never noticed any issues installing it when doing A/C refurb work. Photos of you engine might help us to see if there is anything different about your car.
tried tha same one.. would not go.. mine's identical brackets with factory pulleys on all four pieces to tha three pictures in tha thread below.. picked up tha solid green gates from tha ole guy at Oreilleys and it fit.. its 56 3/4.. listed as 57 inches..
