I have been chasing an intermittent chatter/grind/scrape for a while. Thought it was diff clutch related so had it rebuilt to no avail. Now am thinking disintegrating e-brake or wheel bearing. Seems to be right wheel related.
At 12 and 6 oclock i get 0.004” deflection at the rotor edge. At 3 and 9 oclock i get 0.005” deflection. Is a wheel bearing in my future?
A lot depends on if the bearings have ever been replaced.
If so and done correctly, they are greased. If there is no history on bearing service, it may be possible they are original and by now the grease is dried up and gone. The bearings will overheat and if they weld to the axle may break it.
You should not have any noise from the bearings. Your measurement may not be accurate but if you grab a wheel stud you should not feel any movement pushing and pulling on the axle. It should not bind or free wheel either.
Eureka! What I thought was rear end related turned out to be in the front. I had my wife drive the car while i ran alongside. Definitely Right front source. Pulled the wheel and sure enough the brake pad retaining pin had pulled loose once the cotter pin let go. It worked its way towards the rim until it scraped and eventually bent at a 45* angle. No damage to caliper or rim fortunately. This thread can be closed. Thanks for the help from the Forum.
