#@*& Diverter Valve
I thought I would share my experience with a bad diverter valve and the issues I was having in hopes that it will keep another person from spending too much time and money on things other than a bad valve.
My 73 stated backfiring (out the pipes) when I would push in on the clutch from second to third and also when you would rev it up. I assumed that it was either timing or the carb. I checked the timing and it was OK, so I figured I would rebuild the Quadrajet (needed it anyway). Well, that didn't work either. I was out of ideas.
I ended up taking it to 2 different shops and they did not know either. One re-rebuilt my Carb (it was suggested that I did it wrong), the other started trying to adjust the timing to compensate... Well, when they started doing a compression test I said that was enough.
I had a friend (old chevy dealer mechanic) with whom I was sharing my expensive experience and he said "diverter valve." It was just that quick.
I simply removed the belt and no more backfire... I have since replaced the valve and no problems.
Two shops and they did not have a clue... Sigh...
I hope this helps someone:-)
I did just find an origional 7043213 (73 Quadrajet for L-82 W/4 speed)quadrajet Carb. It is dated Oct of 72 and my vette is Nov. 72 so my search for the Carb is done - nice match. I have been looking since I bought the car.
So how much snow did you get Ed?
