.019" gap setting for a new set of points. Dwell meter would be 30 degrees.

thanks Stingr69, waiting on a few final items from auto parts store warehouse, will set initial gap at .019 then dwell 30 degrees... then a timing, I have an older timing light with dwell meter but havent used it in many years so just wanted a good gap starting point in the event the dwell doesn't work any more.

Virtually all points sets these days irregardless of brand are made by Standard. I'm rather amazed that there is such a variety of variances on points sets. The NAPA version recommended by Lars et al above is a great choice. Delco 45 heat range has long been recommended by SWCDuke.

You appear to have the original heavy stock springs on your advance weights. You can do this later as a follow-up, outside of the tuneup process - but you might also benefit from re-curving the distributor - in simple terms you might end up replacing one(1) of the stock springs w/ a lighter aftermarket so-called performance spring for example. Request of Lars a copy of his ignition tuning white paper.

Never heard of a timing light w/ dwell, interesting - that sounds modern.

yeah its an older one for sure and haven't used it in many years,
yeah its an old one for sure, haven't used it in years and have a dial back I've been using... I will likely just pick up a dwell meter.
I just got the last items I've been waiting for and installed the cap and rotar... buttoned up the ignition parts and fired it up... sounds good and will run a dwell meter next then timing.
all fluids filled except need to fill rear differential tomorrow and I can drop the car back down, will be easier under the hood with the car lowered, will likely take it for its first real drive this week.

How cool - a vintage timing light with built in analog dwell. Assuming it works - I don't see a need to buy a second separate dwell.

Cool ORBIT tool

Here's another timing light w/ dwell & tach. This one made by HELLA, and apparently in current production

Its been many years since I've used it, I am filling the differential fluid later this morning to button up the underside work then on to dwell and timing, hope it works but if not I can get a digital dwell meter local.

That old Orbit timing light and dwell meter worked great, car is still up in the air but set the dwell at 30 degrees and set 8 degrees initial timing at just a tick over 800 RPMs
Will get a total timing when the car is back down and I can rev the motor not early Sunday morning but the antique worked perfect and car sounds great.
I still have the warranty card anyway. 😉

Golf
If you want to get driving without resetting your distributor curve (as per Lars excellent instructions) just set your timing at 12 degrees advance and it should run well. If you are at factory 4 degrees your idle will probably be a little high and need to be adjusted down.

thanks VERYSOON, I actually set it to 9 degrees advance initial timing... I do plan on doing a total timing later this week, I just removed everything to get the car back down on the ground and backed out, I have a garage mess to clean before travel tomorrow but happy with all results and feel it will be ready for the road by next weekend.

You can't do total timing with stock distributor springs. You need Mr Gasket 928G spring kit.
