On the front of the 1968-1970E ignition shielding box is a clip riveted in place. This was apparently a ground strap. Does anyone have a picture of it in place showing how it connects to the air cleaner? Mine is attached pointing downward as shown in View A.
Mine points down as well. It's hard to see but it touches the bottom of the air cleaner. One of these days I'm going to change that distributor gasket.
The bottom half of the air cleaner is painted black. So this riveted metal finger contacts a painted surface. Not clear exactly what its meant to accomplish. I read that its a grounding strap. But if its contacting paint, it doing nothing. Notice it has a serrated edge
What a great picture. It looks like the finger would be pressing into the air filter element. I know that there was an issue with the shielding and the air cleaner lid impacting each other, but the finger must wear into the filter as well.
The tab engages the dropped base air cleaner. There is an area in the ignition box that allows this to recess.
The little curve or coil on the tab only engages the filter element slightly.
It all assembles nicely as designed.
