Default 1979 Corvette center console Lights

Hi,

My two top gauges are only dimly lite up all of a sudden. The bottom gauges are fine. All other lights are fine as well. I'm sure the lighting back there is weird... Does anyone know how to get access to the lights?

Thanks,
Scott

You could try getting behind the cluster by removing the glove box liner, but I'm pretty sure you have to pull the center gauge cluster out to access the lamps and bulbs. There's only four screws holding the liner in, but I think the upper AC and defroster ducts, and other things will keep you from doing anything behind the cluster.

There is no wiring behind your gauge cluster, instead the gauges and cluster lights are all wired by a floppy printed circuit board, which could quite likely be your problem. To remove the center cluster you need to remove the carpet console side panels to get to two hex head screws that hold the bottom of the center cluster to the shift console plate. The carpeted side panels are each held on by three screws, often hidden from view by the carpet pile. There are also 6 (I think) screws that hold the cluster to the dash, two in the top and two on each side. Don't try to remove the Torx head screws visible on the front of the cluster, they're fake and molded as part of the cluster. It may sound silly to have to say that but I've sold new clusters to people who broke theirs trying to remove those fake screws. It's been a while since I pulled one of those clusters, but if I remember right it's easier to disconnect the radio from the cluster instead of trying to remove it with the cluster.

Way too complicated for me! I'm an electrical guy not mechanical. I will need to live with this. The last person who was in my dash did this.

Thank you

I'm not very mechanical. I prefer to have someone who is fix this at some point. Not a priority right now.
