I need to rebuilt the parking brakes. Can the brake shoes be replaced with out pulling the axle? We started working on the brakes because ,I broke two axle studes.my helper used a screw driver to pull the shoes apart to take out the adjusting screw I can't get the shoes lined up. I think the rod that springs goes on is bent
Yes, it can be done once you remove the rotor. If the rotor has never been removed, you will need to drill out the 5 steel rivets. Mark the location of the rotor before removing them. Best thing to do next is to search the C-2 and C-3 forums on how to remove and replace the shoes, springs and hardware. All Corvettes from 66 to 82 used the same parking brakes as did most of the 65s. A small number of 65 Corvettes came equipped with drum brakes and used a different parking brake system. Replacement parts are available at most of the major vendors. If at all possible, use the original shoes as some of the new ones have to be machined or custom fit to the rotor. Jerry

Yes they can usually be replaced on the car.. You have to work around the axle flange using needle nose and a slotted flat blade screwdriver. If the hold down pins are bent from previous workers it might not work. In order to replace both pins the axle has to come out, that will lead to rebuilding the axles/bearings.

Plenty of info on the Forum regarding this. I find Google search works better for me than the Forum search. Been a few years since I did my 68 (same as yours) and it was a real treat that I hope I don't experience again.
