Paint # 992 (I believe it's Corvette Bronze)
Trim #425 (I believe it's Dark Orange Vinyl )
Also on the tag is states M03. What does this mean?
Also what engine and tranny did it originally come with?
Thanks
1 - Chevrolet Motor Division
9 - Corvette
4 - V-8 Engine
67 - Convertible
8 - Last Digit of Model Year
S - St Louis Assembly Plant
427769 - Build Sequence Number (Starting at 400000)
Your car is 1 of 18,630 convertibles built in '68
You are correct with the paint and trim codes
M03 is the build date which is Aug 3th '68...the final month of production
There is no way of determining the engine/tranny combo from this info.
You have a 1968 Corvette convertible, who's body was built on July 3rd. It was the 27,769th unit built out of a total production of 28,566 (9,936 Coupe, 18,630 Convertible). You are correct about the color codes.

I was told the car was purchased in Texas by a women and was an L79 (327 350) engine and had a TH400 swapped in at the dealer. It was on the lot and she wanted the car, but didn't want a stick.

Does the car have a removable trans crossmember, or is it welded in? What is the redline on the tach? How about the radiator configuration and the numbers on the carb? This will help you determine if the car was originally a 350hp car, since the TH400 was not offfered w/the L79.

The crossmember is bolted in as all TH400 cars are, and the tach, If I remember correctly has a redline of 5,500? Sound right? My dad has owned the car since 1979. I do not have the orginal carb or engine. :( Not that it matters now that BB is going in. :D
To me that sounds like a reasonable story. You have a very late build car, and the dealer was probably pretty desperate to get rid of it!! I believe the 350 hp cars only came with a manual transmission but i am not sure if you could get either M20 or M21. You will have to crawl underneath and take a look at the differential to see what you have. (edit - brain fart!!) you can always jack up the rear, turn the rear wheel and count the driveshaft turns to determine the rearend ratio.. MJ

Hmmm, thats odd. Shouldn't there be visable signs of the welded crossmember being removed if the car was originally a manual???
No, it was changed before my dad bought the car. Can't say I don't blame the previous owner. :D If was faded red with faded red interior when he bought it. It was in ROUGH shape, I'll have to post the pics when he brout it home, I was 2yrs old. He said he slept on the couch for 3 nights after bringing it home.
Corey, not that it matters to you. but it sounds like it was a base motor 300hp car with a TH400 tranny. Not that there's anything wrong with that :)
I doubt that the dealer would have gone through the trouble to convert the frame, tach, etc if it really was just a tranny swap. Then again, I couldn't see a dealer swapping the tranny from manual to auto anyway. Too much labor involved to swap radiator, backup light and neutral switches, pedal assemblies, center console plate, and probably other things I'm overlooking. The warranty issues alone would be a pain to deal with.

:iagree:
Corey, thats a really cool story. I would love to see some pics someday.

I have to agree with you. Though it doesn't bother me either way. I never had the desire to own a 100pt Bloomington car. The car will never be restored to factory correct, so it's really not an issue.
Corey, Yes, that is a very late VIN '68. My first '68 was VIN #28200. I also once saw a '68 with VIN #28496. Had to have been a "last day" production car!!! I think that Bronze/Dark Orange combo is neat myself. I've seen probably two or three of them. Still an "ODD but  " combo to me. :yesnod:
