tire size for 16" wheels
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
Just looking for input about tire sizes 245/60-16 and 245/55-16.
Anybody know of any good makes/models/ditributors of these particular sizes (already tried tirerack.com). I am finding it difficult to find the 245/60-16 size and I am starting to doubt this size is even manufactured at all.
Any recommendations about different tire sizes for 16" wheels other than the sizes I have listed above?
What I wound up doing was running 245-50-16 BFG KDW tires. I love the tires, they hook like glue, but the diameter is nearly an inch too short. So, my speedo is off, and I have had to lower the car about an inch to make it look right, which seems to allow a few thing to drag the ground occasionally (YIKES!).
Wish I had bought 17"s, but I really wanted these wheels. Now they are available in 17"s, two piece, but it's going to be hard to cough up the $$$ considering my current wheels/tires have less than 2K miles on them.
Let us know if you find a 16" tire that works.
Thanks,
jeff

I wouldn't really consider the 255/50/16 or 245/50/16 sizes as odball sizes. If you search the Tire Rack site, there are more passenger tires available in the 255/50/16 size (18 different models) and 245/50/16 (38 different models) versus the 255/50/17 size (10 passenger, and 4 truck models). Seems like there are plenty of choices for 16" wheels.
As far as the outside diameter is concerned, I agree with Pat. The difference is about 3/4". Now when you calculate the % difference, it amounts to about 3% which is, for me, not very significant. When you're going 100mph, the speedometer will read 103. Ride height and wheel well clearance is 1/2 of the differences in diameter, which works out to 3/8". Again, for me that wasn't a big difference.
I selected 16" wheels because I liked the look, the tires were cheaper than 17" ones, and I didn't see a significant difference between the stock tire diameter and the 255/50/16 tires.
Which wheels are you running on your Vette?
I still have the OEM rallye wheels on my new (new to me that is) 77. I like the 16" size for the same reasons you listed Mark70. I suppose I could go with 235/60-16. ~sigh~ decisions, decisions...
