Default Another Silly Question-This Time Portable Garages-Reduce Width

This evening we read of emsrescu suffering a vexing injury to his Corvette from snowload on a 10' x 20' portable garage. And I empahsize with him. But who can predict and deal with the snow loads you Eastern USA people have been experiencing? I certainly hope all works out well with his insurance claim!

This is a twist on his post as I have been considering one of those portable garages for some time. And 10' x 20' is the choice. That is a standard size and I can find one locally without shipping costs or custom cuts. They are basically aluminum pipe framing with a heavy vinyl cover. Fairly simple but sturdy unless you experience what emsrecu has. My dilemma (and I will not go into the details) is that I have to get the 10' width down to 9'. And I need some suggestions as to how to do that from folks who have constructed these garages. So I only need 6" on each side. My initial attempt at the local building centre was to bend the aluminum posts inward on each side. Actually that seemed to work but imposed an outward stress. Then I thought of cutting the appex (top) connecting pipes 6" on each side. But that would mean that the male/female connects would be compromised. Any suggestions on this? If not clear, I can further explain.
