I’m converting my 73 from power brakes to manual brakes.
The Shop Manual states on manual brake cars to remove a brake pedal return spring on disassembly then later it states to install the spring during reassembly and installation of the pedal box.
The way it’s worded in the Shop Manual, it sounds like there is a separate spring for the manual brake cars.
I spent a couple hours searching for an additional brake pedal spring in both the AIM and the Parts and Accessories Catalog but don’t see any reference to any additional brake pedal springs other than item #5 in the below picture of the AIM.
Am I missing something?
Is the only brake pedal return spring the one that the pedal shaft goes through and attaches to the pedal box assembly???
Thanks,
Greg
Thanks for responding!
The spring in the pedal box assembly isn’t the issue.
The way the shop manual reads, it sounds like there is an additional independent spring other than the spring on the pedal shaft.
It's definitely worded poorly. To me, that second mention of the spring on manual cars reads as separate instructions from the previous paragraph, not a continuation. Like two completely different people were assigned to write instructions for automatic/manual cars and only the second one felt it necessary to mention manual brakes.
I don't know. My car only has the one spring in the pedal box but it was converted from auto/power to manual/manual so I can't say definitively.
Yeah it is poorly formatted/worded. Here's what my 71 chassis service manual shows:
I know this is for a different year, but the systems appear similar if not idwntical to the 73. These instructions only mention the brake pedal return spring one time in each the removal and installation sections so I assume there is only one spring which is the one on the pedal rotation shaft as shown in the blow-up diagram.
On these instructions it only mentions that spring for manual brake cars which mine is. It leads me to believe that there is no such spring for power brake cars but previous comments on this tread seem to say otherwise.
On my 69 ,with manual brakes , it only has the one spring on the pedal shaft . I know it`s a different year but I believe the set up is the same .

I have been trying to upload these two drawings for a while, but the upload kept stopping at 90%. They show the differences between Manual and Power Brakes.
they are from the 1953 - 1982 Parts and Illustration Catalog.

I spent way too long last evening trying to upload screenshots of the catalog pages I have (look to be the same quality as yours). For some reason the uploaded jpg and png files just showed a blank spot and no image. Must be a pdf protection of some sort.
Thanks mine show the same thing.
It was the wording in the Shop Manual that reads like there are actually two separate springs.
The AIM and PAC illustrations show just one.
Sometimes I may have to go to the Options Tab when uploading a picture and change it to large or even medium to get them to fully load.
With PDF’s I usually take a screen shot and upload it as a picture.
