Default 82 Headlight Switch

I got a new headlight switch and it does not fit correctly. The part that goes against the dash is much bigger than the OEM switch so the hole does not line up. I've looked at all I could find online and they all look like they are from the same manufacturer in China. I could take a grinder to it maybe... anyone installed one in their 78-82?

The one linked looked pretty much like mine (though mine is 71). Are you seeing an obvious difference between your original and the one you received?

Been a while but as best I recall these fit best rotated a particular way - any other rotated orientation didn't fit so well. You tried rotating it in different positions (perhaps w/o hoses/wire connected yet) and still encounter interference?

Just replaced mine in my 73. make sure the tab is down. There is a small tab on the collar where it meets the dash. That has to align with the ground ring and is in the down, 6 o-clock position.

Yes, the nose of the 82 headlight switch is much rounder and smaller... I'll get a photo in a bit. I tested the OEM switch and I'm just going to put that back in. Sometimes newer is not better. It's possible it might fit upside down but then the tang would not have a place to go.

The 78 AIM calls for part #1995215 which Zip references. Part #1995191 is for a 77. Is there a number stamped on the part you received?

This is what the replacement switch looks like, the part that fits into the dash is much bigger at the bottom than the OEM switch.

This is the OEM switch, I should have taken a photo at the same angle as the file photo above.

The 1982 Factory Assembly Manual calls for the same part #1995215. Doc Rebuild shows a photo of the correct switch and mentions there are differences between the Chinese version and the USA version. Most notable is the front part with the threads in it, the bottom curves up faster on the USA switch than the Chinese one. This is the reason it won't fit in the recess of the dash. Other wise the switches are pretty similar.

Here is the NOS OEM 1995215 headlight switch taken at a similar angle to the china one and you can see the bottom is sloped up faster than the china one and the nose is a bit smaller as well and that's why the china switch won't fit in the recess of the 82 dashboard.
