Hi guys, question regarding the unique speedometer on a stock 81’ with VSS (vehicle speed sensor) on the back…
Ive read everything I can find about it but still murky about specifics. My question is does the VSS simply control the lockup TC? …meaning if it’s not connected the trans behaves ‘normally’ except for lockup?
Or with it not connected is the trans ‘wonky’ now in some way …meaning not shifting correctly at shift points etc. Thanks in advance for any input…

You might want to invest in a copy of the factory Service Manual for 1981.
Yea …I’ve got the assembly manual not the service manual tho. Was hoping someone with actual experience can tell me what the real-life symptoms without the VSS.
Im not worried about they lockup TC not locking up as this car is an around town Ice-cream getter. I don’t want idle or stalling issues tho which “supposedly” could happen without VSS. Wonder what guys are doing with Speedo problems or VSS issues. Can’t find an 81’ specific Speedo online and there’s ONE VSS online for not cheap.
I can see why some guys say screw it and yank the CCC and put in a new distributor and carb. They sure did try to complicate this little car going from 80’ to 81’ …
