Default L71 bell housing

Need a little help here. Was the bell housing on a '68 L71 painted or not and if so what color? Mine is black currently but while I'm rebuilding the engine I have it out and everything else is getting cleaned and refinished. Not chasing NCRS or anything but I'd like it to look right. Thanks as always for the wealth of information and ready help here.

Unpainted with over spray from the engine.

Okay, now you've opened another question. Engine painted and assembled or assembled and painted? I've seen both. But seriously, they painted the engine with the transmission attached?

Engine assembled and then painted. And yes with transmission attached. Yes, overspray on bellhousing next to engine. Generally just a couple inches or so. They only cared how it looked from the top, looking in with hood open.
