Default 82 Exhaust Manifold Issues

I sorta remember the passenger side exhaust bolts being tight all the way off. The front is a bit too far back.

Hmm the rear is a bit too far to the front... makes me wonder if I can enlarge the center holes a bit and fix this.

The exhaust manifolds are as close to a header as you can get and are free flowing unlike cast manifolds.

I'll give you the advice that @gkull gave me. Use studs, not bolts. For maximum clearance, use 3/8" studs (into the head) with 5/16" exposed threads for smaller nuts. As a last resort, you could consider a small-head Torx bolt in one or two positions.

You don't have a unified header flange. Could you bend the tubes a bit to line up the holes better?

I was thinking of heating up the tube with my rosebud torch and seeing if I could move it a tad.

I'm not saying this complication is related to heads having raised ports. But, since they are raised, could that somehow contribute to this complication ? I dunno ?

Me thinks Bikespace insight and OP's as well; to move a tube might be helpful. As well as the stud install.

The bolts were tight on the OEM right head as well. The left manifold fits both heads just fine it's just the right manifold is off a tad.

So while pondering how to hold it I thought just clamp the head to my welding table and bolt the exhaust manifold to the old iron head and get out the rosebud, crowbar, huge channel locks and put it back in the correct place. It did ruin my paint job but oh well. I left it bolted up tight to the head while it cools off. I'll check in a bit if the #2 is still in a happy place.

The front mount on #2 had an odd double ended bolt that held the AC support bracket but I may not put AC back in dunno at this point I just want it to run!

Now is the perfect time to get them ceramic coated or cerakoted.

I've got a giant pair of channelocks about that size too; mine's got red handles. Those things have saved our butts more time than I can could ever count.

I had to twist the front bolt hole down a bit and after that pull it flat to the head. I think I'm good now just going to ream the holes out they have a bit of weld in them.
