I contacted the tech support of Howards Cams via email two days ago, and asked them the best combo for my ‘sporty’ street built 355 project (with th350 and 3.08 gears). I gave them all my specs (even weight of the car etc.).
I also ‘underlined’ that the car is mainly for street and highway use.
(Dur. @0.050 = 219/225 , lobe sep. = 112)
with a 2000-2200 torque converter (Stock would be too low for the street in combination with the 3.08) they said.
1. What do you guys think of that roller cam?
2. What would be a good brand for street converters? (Summit part # fir a goid torq. con. would be great.)
3. I think I will need a small cooler too. When driving on the highway. There will be more heat generated with the converter and camshaft combination. No?
I am in Atlanta for two days (on vacation). Summit Mcdonough is not so far.
Can't comment on the converter but I have that cam with Lobe Separation of 110, instead of 112, with a 4 speed and 3.70 gear with AFR 64 CC 180 eliminator heads along with 10.2 compression and, for the street, the mid range torque from 2,500-4,500 RPM is pretty tough to beat. The 355 will pull in 4th gear with no bucking/lugging/shifting to a lower gear from 800-900 RPM and pulls strong to 6,000 RPM. I can engage the clutch from idle in 1st without giving any gas with this cam and my engine combo which the stock L-82 would not do previously.
With that 3:08 rear gear and the kind of driving you do, I’d step down one size to increase your torque.
my nickel…..
Agree^^^^
Had a 1973 Nova with a turbo 350 trans and 3.08 gear with a comp cams 260 cam with 212 duration, operating range 1,200- 5,200 RPM, which would be better suited for low rpm torque.
