A typical performance timing curve would be something like 12* initial, and 32-36* total @ 3000rpm, both with no vac can.
(32* for modern heads, 36* for old school.)
Then vac can, on manifold vac, should add only 12* to the initial, at idle. (For modern gas.)
If way over 12* you will need to limit the vac can, or you'll likely get rattle.
