I am in the process of rebuilding the shifter on the automatic 1982 C3. Prior to rebuilding I noticed that I could from park all the way to 1 (and back again) without the shifter locking up and without pressing the button to release the shifter. As such I decided to pull it and figured I'd give it a good clean. While cleaning it, I notice that there's a sticky substance on everything inside the shaft. I can only assume that it's either 40 year old grease that's no longer good, or the previous owner(s) decided to try and fix the problem by putting something in the shaft. Needless to say, that old sticky stuff is gone.
The springs are also bad as in they're no longer actually pushing anything back so I ordered a rebuild kit that should arrive in the next day or so.
I am wondering if I need to use any sort of grease/lubricant in the shaft when I put it back together. I saw some other posts on the C1 forum but it seems as though some recommend one product while another recommends something else. I'm leaning towards using white lithium but wanted to get some input before I did anything of the sort.
