Am I doing something wrong or is this a result of poor quality materials? I've replaced the differential front mount (snubber) kit (rubber cushions, plate, washers, bolt and nut). As I torque the nut the split washer spreads open (see photo). Note that the nut surface is also deformed. The AIM calls for 55 - 75 ft lbs, but the washer deforms long before 55. All parts came in a kit from a supplier that appears respected on this forum (and I've used often). Sort of looks like the nut is too soft and bites into the washer instead of compressing it. Tips will be appreciated.

Absolutely. That's not really a great idea. Using quality fasteners is the answer. So many things that come with hardware these days come with inferior hardware. I have such a problem over here in Australia, even the hardware stores sell junk. That I've taken to ordering genuine Harley Davidson nuts, bolts and lock washers. They are actually top quality. No lock washers spreading apart! But I work for Harley. Which helps. But it's still expensive.
I've been very pleased with the nuts, bolts, and trim screws from AMK Products. Not the most convenient due to $30 minimum order, shipping, and having to get a selection to have on hand, but they seem to be a very solid small business. Much of their stock is US or Canadian made — and if you know the GM part number, they often have it in the description and searchable.
The bottom line is, the difference in cost between premium quality hardware and cheap foreign made hardware is actually pretty wide.
But our cars deserve the good stuff! Although parts suppliers seem to feel if they are including hardware. The cheap stuff is good enough.
It's just not.
Generally speaking, if hardware comes with any part. Throw it in the bin.
These no need for those split washers anymore when a drop of loctite will do the job, or a self locking nut. That pic in post #1 is just poor quality parts.
Bad parts will be bad regardless, but a NASA study in 1990 showed that split ring washers are ineffective at preventing loosening on threaded fasteners. Thats what adequate torque is for, and why you’ll never see them on newer cars. Here’s more information about it.

I’ve been an engineer for several defense contractors for the last 40 years and we have never used split lock washers on anything. We used either lock nuts or loctite.
