I looked at the emissions sticker and my factory manual and can't find anywhere where it states to adjust the float level with the car idling in gear. I can't even find any mention of floats in my factory service manual.
For me adding an aftermarket carburetor I would follow the manufacturers instructions for setting the float level.

You cannot have a sense of humor on here. Some people actually ask for torque specs of the most mundane bolts. It is like they would loose points in NCRS judging if the correct torque is not used.
Others have no mechanical aptitude or common sense and will try doing what you suggest.
If we loose our sense of humor this site would be pretty boring sometimes. I appreciate the humor and frequently agree with it.
If someone really tried to adjust their engine while the manual transmission car is idling in gear. Maybe they should be driving a Honda and leave the old Corvettes to those with a bit of mechanical prowess. I thought it was a pretty funny joke...
When we discuss things with people seeking answers we take our job seriously. I separate humor from business carefully.
Life is Too short not to have some good Humor in it! Too Old too soon, too smart too late....
Move your vacuum advance hose from the ported position on the primary metering block to the manifold vacuum port on the throttle body front.
Also you have to check float level and adjust mixture screws in Drive, parking brake on, wheels chocked.
Seems like you did say to check the float level in Drive...
