I have the fuel sending unit/pump out of my '82 C3 and while I was waiting for parts I was thinking of flushing the fuel lines with some kind of fuel system cleaner or fresh gas. I was planning on connecting a generic electric fuel pump to the supply line at the tank end and pump the cleaner/gas from a gas can through the supply line with a hose from the return line back to the can. Am I correct in assuming this will work as long as the pump is at a higher pressure then the pressure regulator setting? In other words, if I have a pump that is pumping at 30 psi will the cleaner/gas make it full circle from the gas can and back? I have a Holley electric fuel pump that only does 4-7 psi but my second assumption is that this pump won't work because the regulator will not bypass any fuel at that low of a pressure. Is that correct?
Thanks PiersonPie. I was hoping to leave everything connected at the engine, maybe just because I'm too lazy. But my excuse would be because I was hoping to keep circulating the cleaner instead of a once shot deal. The car has been sitting for quite some time so I suspect there may be some varnish in the lines that I was hoping would get cleaned up if I kept the circulation going.
cease hoping against hope.
Disconnect and purge with air pressure and strong solvent.
acquire at least a gallon of Race gas or AvGas; either contains high levels of benzene & toluene which Will cut varnish.
Its a dirty, harsh endeavor.
You might want to change the fuel filter and while that's out flush from the tank to the fuel filter. In case you don't know it's located behind the right front wheel on the frame.
