Well I learned that you shoudln't assembly things when you are tired. I was up late last night reassembling my steering column. Got it 80% back together and then this morning I notice an extra part. I had it off to the side painting it so I didn't even notice it till it was too late.
Awww poopie! Guess I'll be real good at rebuild these columns as I have to take it COMPLETLEY apart again!!! :mad :banghead:
BTW, don't worry I was going to mask and paint the column. I wouldn't put that ugly, scratched thing back in with a makeover.. :yesnod:
ahh yes, the steering column :) good luck. I did mine a coiple of years ago to fix the theft damage on it. I only had the haynes manual and it said to turn a certain part (it was a cap holding a spring) counter clockwise, it was wrong. It should be the other way around. When I did that the spring jumped out and nearly took my eye out ;) :D I've sworn never to do that again but those 3 bolts for the tilt stuff are a bit loose and there's play on it again, should have used loctite.. maybe it's time to pull it apart again :(
I think that my instructions posted at http://www.corvettefaq.com are bit more complete. However, I am always open to suggestions as to how to make them clearer and more complete.
Jim your documentation is good. But when it's midnight and you are on a roll you tend to just start sticking parts together when they fit. It's not till you notice an extra part sitting in the corner that you get that sinking feeling.
I did something similar on the spring. Took me 15 mins to figure out I had it in backwards
As Homer Simpson would say.... DOH!!! :banghead: I had a terrible time when I changed my straight column out for a tilt/tele. I had to send it back to the folks that "rebuilt" it 3 times before they got it right... :( Yeah, that meant 3 times I had to remove the old one, install the new one, remove the new one, reinstall the old one... :mad UGHHH!!! At least you have took the initiative to do it yourself. I had to rely on someone else for the initial assy..
Well look at the brite side. You will gain much knowledge doing it twice, and that will give Jim a break, as you will be a near expert and can answer others questions.  :jester
I am about ready to go together with mine as well. I am going in tommorrow morning to pick up my parts. Then back together my column goes. Should be fun. Good luck with your second time around. Later.
