I'm having a 406 built that uses the 168-tooth ext. bal. flywheel. I recently purchased a GMPP Bow-tie Gear Reduction Starter (Part # 12361146 ) that works fine w/ my 327, but I'm wondering if it will work w/ the 400 block?
Does the 400 SBC use the straight or staggered bolt configuration?
All three 400 blocks I have owned (all different casting numbers) have been drilled and tapped for the staggered starter bolt configuration. Interestingly enough, one of them is an "either/or" setup. That's not to say they're all like that, tough.
my 400 block was staggered.
The starters that have the staggered positions and the "cover" over the starter gear, are 400block specific and work great, the blocks that have the inline will take most straight across bolt patterns in the shifted out to the passenger side position but may require varying extent of shimming,
good luck
