Default clutch chatter

What are all possible sources of clutch chatter during engagement?

One possibility is your flywheel needs to be turned, resurfaced, or replaced. lou

It could be 'indexed' improperly. this basically means the clutch, flywheel and pressureplate are Not all parallel to each other and perpendicular to the tranny shaft and rotation of the crankshaft.

Like they said, it is almost always flywheel surface warpage ( need resurfacing) or one other possibility is oil getting onto flywheel.

When I had my clutch done the mechanic told me that he had a problem with clutch chatter in stingrays.

He mentioned that he had to redo a 68 a few times before he figured out what it was. I was told that the throwout bearings that are new are plastic. He said he wouldn't ever put a plastic throwout bearing in a stingray again. He made a special trip to get an all metal one (like the original) for mine so that it wouldn't have this problem.

If you recently had it done, this could be an issue.

Components contaminated with oil, disc could be glazed from excessive heat, springs in the disc could be broken or missing. The only fix is to r&r it won't go away

Good ideas, thanks. Here is the history:
Clutch was replaced about 2500 miles ago with LUK replacement kit by a reputable shop. (I would have attempted myself, but don't have proper lifting equipment). The flywheel was resurfaced. Initially they installed the wrong size pilot bushing, and I took it back immediately because it would make funny noises when disengaged. Ever since then, I frequently get nasty chattering when trying to feather the clutch when crawling in traffic or a parking lot. Seems to be worse when hot. Wondering if the wrong sized bushing caused the input shaft to bend, or if it damaged the transmission bearings.

How can I check if oil is the source?

Interesting idea about the plastic bearing; I never considered that. How can I check to see if it is plastic?

Thats pry the same clutch set I had put in. LUK

He had the whole thing apart and I was able to pick up both throwout bearings and there is a difference. I don't know how you would be able to check with it in the car

He seemed very very adamant about using a metal bearing and not the plastic one that came with the kit. It was for the exact reson you stated. Chatter.

Hopefully someone can chime in on how to see if thats the one you have installed.

You probably have a clutch realated problem. But another thing to be aware of is that the clutches in the limites slip rear end will make those same chattering noises when at low speeds or turning at low speeds like in or out of a parkinglot. Just good to be sure the noise is coming from up front.

I agree. I had clutch chatter and it turned out to be a broken spring.

Broken engine/tranny mounts can cause chatter too. Good luck.
