Default 3:08 or 3:55

I'm dropping off the rear differential and the guy over the phone asked me if I wanted to use the same gears or install bigger ones. What's your thoughts? and where can I price out cost for new gears?

Do you do a lot of freeway driving, or a lot of drag racing? If highway, stick with 3.08. If you wanna race, go to 3.55.

I don't drag race..on the track that is.. :D I do drive around town and back and forth to work.. 45mph roads.. and some highway.. With 3.08 I was turning almost 3000rpms at 65mph.. Guess it will be much higher with 3:55?
I'm not a kid but I would like to break the rear tires when I wanted to.. Right now I get a little chirp but not much more. Will the 3:55 make it easier.. Not that it's important but.. well.. it is..

Are you sure you have 3.08 rear gears? That already sounds more like 3.55 to me. Go to http://www.smokemup.com/auto_math/index.php and do some calculations to check your rear gear ratio....and to check what it would be like with a different ratio.

If you have a 4-speed, you should always be able to light up those tires by revving the engine and popping the clutch :yesnod:

I just dumped my 3.08s in favor of 3.70s. I can't tell you how anxious I am to put the car onthe grojund and try them out at the track. My best-ever 60-foot time with the 3.08s was 1.74. I think that number ought to come down a bit with the 3.70s. :reddevil But I have some bushings to swap and some tubes for the MTs to order...

:iagree:

My 3:55 gears run right at 3000 RPM at 60 MPH.

I upgraded to the 3.54 Spicer gearset when I had my new rear diff blueprinted. I have my orig 3.08 geared differential sitting under the workbench. I moved to the 3.54's since I added the 700R4 with the .70 overdrive and now benefit from both neck snapping off of the line acceleration and a final (over)drive ratio improvement over the 3.08/TH350 combo. I added a 1800rpm stall torque converter and a goodly number of engine power-adders that really make standing starts much more exciting :smash: :smash: :smash:

New gears are about $200-250 from most reputable differential shops.

Now with the stock tranny I like the 3.08s on the street. If I ever put in a tranny with an overdrive though I will change to 3.55s.

Just for info, and not that you would want to with a 4spd that has 1:1 4th ratio, but you can go as low as 3.90 using the same carrier. I swapped out 3.08 for 3.90 and used the same diffirential carrier. With my O/D auto tranny which has .67 4th, convertor locked in 4th returns 2250rpm@65mph with 26" diameter tires. The 3.90 + the 2.74 1st gear ratio gives great TQ from the hole.

get no less than 3.54s!! the only reason I got 3.55s is cause i do use highways frequently, otherwise I would have gotten 3.73s

I'd Go with the 3:55. Your not highway driving all the time. And that higher gear will improve your acceleration alot....

Before you decide to change and then what to change to, make sure you know what yur starting with. Tachs arent always accurate. Not always a good idea to guess these things.

Now that the rear is out of the car.. is there a way to tell.. or someone that knows what they are doing can tell by looking at them.. Are they stamped someplace?

Hold one side yoke still - and turn the other.
Count the # of turns that the input yoke makes for 1 side yoke revolution.
It should be fairly easy to tell 3.08 vs 3.55 vs 3.73.

HM - just looked in the resto guide (Richard Prince).
Maybe a typo - but the book says ALL 1980s are 3.07.
Look for a code OF or OH somewhere.

Divide the number of ring gear teeth by the number of pinion gear teeth for the ratio.
PS: The strut bushings can be pressed, burned or cut out. I prefer to press them.

Im also getting ready to change my 3.08's out for a 3.55 rear that Im rebuilding. Anyone made this swap before? How much of an acceleration difference do you think I will feel?

If you have a four speed with a 2.88 first gear then I would stay with the 3.08 rear end it is deep enough :D

I installed 3:70 rear gears....then installed a performance 700R4 with a Super Yank 3500 stall.....Car is crazy out of the hole on street tires.....hooks like super glue with MT ET Streets.....and cruises like a kitten on the freeway.....will go to 150 MPH without affecting the wind-blown devil-may-care James Bondish look on my face. :D :seeya Cappy
