Default Should I buy this Engine??????

I just went to talk to an engine builder on my plans to build a 383 stroker for the 79 vette. He has a complete roller 383 producing 500hp. sitting in a race car that has never been down the track. He will sell from pan to intake with dist/wires (MSD). and water pump and fuel pump for $4,000.00. I heard the car run it fired right up. The heads are World Product heads with all the head work done buy a turbine engineer at Cape Canaveral. Should I buy this engine and put it in my Vette or is this thing to Radical?? It will run on pump gas. He also said I could run 100 shots of NOS easiely the way it is set up. If I wanted to go bigger shots he would have to re-ring the engine. What do you guy's think? this is about $1,000 out of my budget. for a long block. This engine was build by a Pro Race engine builder.

A little more info he told me it cost over $8,000 to build this engine, the previous owner of the car had $30,000 in the car. This guy bought it for $15,000 and is putting a big block in the car.

seems a bit radical for my taste.. keep in mind you have vaccum operated headlight doors so the cam cant be too much

We talked about that, I may have to add another reserve tank to get good vacum. I am trying to have the car ready for Beach Bend Dragway in Bowling Green during the Gathering. I am not sure how much "daily" driving the car will get. The wife and I talked about BG and I am going to trailer the car up there. It does have a huge cam .580   :reddevil :reddevil

Bob,

Mighty hefty bunch of HP for a C-3 that is basically stock besides the engine. Sounds like a great price, but remember you gotta keep the tuning(& tires) on it afterwards. Not saying don't buy it or do. Just consider what you are getting into before you take the dive.

I think it depends on how you plan to use the car. It could be good and it could be bad. Personally, it would not be for me.

So, needs to be reringed for big shot nitrous, what size rings are in there? if they're too thin I'd be worried about piston temperatures, thinner rings dissipate heat less quickly and I don't think you will want to rebuild it after every drive you make.

It sounds good but almost too good. I would definitely want to know about the internals. Are they forged... What pistons, what rings, valves sizes?. CR?? It sound like a pretty good deal though. That HP would be fine, no problems on the street, or with Vacuum, Mine is similar..

bgrice,
I don't think I will use it as a daily driver. I will probably sell the car next year. I will keep this motor though, I will put the original back in. I have to get a chrome bumper vert. I will try to pick one up without an engine. And I will try not to break things on this car, one good thing is there is not a track real close.

I hear ya, I will not use it as a daily driver. The paint is almost perfect I am working on getting it perfect. I have to re-shoot the doors. So I do not want it sitting in parking lots. It will be a weekend driver.

He said I could run 100 shots all day long, just 200 and above would be to much on the rings in there. I doubt I would ever run NOS in it. 500 hp Is more than enough to have fun with.

It's not the fact that you can't run a 200 shot, it's the fact that somehow the rings can't take it. That's what makes me wonder about what size they are. I wouldn't want anything thinner than about 1/16" , not because of nitrous but because of heat dissipation through the rings.

He said everything is top of the line. He is just not a sb guy. He is building a BB for the car. He will provide me with a complete list of the parts in the engine.

I see. I will ask him what is in it. And if they are too thin I expect he would change them out.
Thanks

World Product Heads and 500HP??? Well - they have to be heavily ported to be able to get to 500 HP with those.. Usually - Sportsman II Heads are usually heads that are used on engines up to 450 HP.. I never saw those heads on 500+ HP engines (exept blown engines)...

Olivier

P.S. If the engine really outputs 500 HP.. and it hasn't been raced too much... it's well worth the money

The guy told me that a turbine engineer at the Cape did all the work on the heads. He said it cost If I remember right, around $1,200 for the head work. I would definately Dyno the car when it is finished. He pulled one of the vavle covers off for me. I really could not tell anything from looking. It had all kinds of colorfull aluminum things on it. gold roller rockers and Blue things above then. I can't remember what he called it. He said it was needed for the engine being a roller.
