The ZZ4 shortblock is relatively inexpensive - at least when compared to a 383 shortblock.
But what about quality of the block itself?
It´s a 4-bolt block, anybody knows anything about it´s quality?
Engine builders told me that they prefere old blocks because the block quality was better these days?
I could imagine using a ZZ4 shortblock as a fundation for a really hot 350.
Speaking about 500 HP at 10.5 CR and a little under 500 lbsft.
Buying a hort block would save a lot of work, but again - are they good quality? What should be necessary to do before assembling the rest?
At least you should check all the torque settings and tolerances.
Anybody did this on a new ZZ4 shortblock?
Interested in some experiences...

the tolerances and machining on old blocks is certainly not better than on new ones. Maybe your builder means that the older ones are preferred because the casting has come to rest during the many heat cycles. The only old blocks that are nice to have are the higher nickel and tin content blocks (used for better and more consistent pouring during casting). These are the 010 020 blocks (stamped on front behind distributor cover)
The ZZ4 12561723 shortblock is a 10105123 - Bare Block “cast iron” 4 bolt main block indeed, the pistons are hypereutectic, the rods are 5,7" powdered metal and the crank is forged 1 pc seal.

I don't know, but agree you should do some checking in to it. The Goodwrench motor i bought is made in Mexico. It says El Hencho In Mexico right on the back of the block.
