Default Oil pressure question

Hey guys, where should the needle be on oil pressure gauge when running/driving on my '81 coupe? I believe it stays just a past 40# now.
Thanks
Brian :auto:

You need 10psi/1000 rpm (10psi per 1000rpm).

GM specs for 81 passenger cars is no more than 40 psi hot or cold. The minimum is 7psi (oil warning light setting for a new switch). The pressure is controlled by the relief spring in the pump. Over time the spring loses its tensile strength due to repeated heating and cooling so pressure will drop over time in a stock pump. The Corvette has a rheostat in the pressure sending unit which degrades also, as well as the gauge itself which is merely an ohmmeter.
If you are running 40psi at off-idle you are within GM specs.
