A customer of mine has a Z06 for a toy. He rarely takes it out, but today his wifes car was in the shop and she had his daily driver. So he had the Z06 at his office. I went by for a "business call" and we took care of a few things and he said "Lets go ride around". We walk outside and he hands me the keys and tells me to drive. He sure did not need to ask twice.
I was amazed at how refined this car is. It is an extremely fun car to drive. The total package. Acceleration and handling. To me the car is much funner in 3rd and 4th gear cruise mode. It pulls effortlessly. 1st and 2nd aren't bad, but this car just seems happiest from 40-90.
Doesn't it just make your afternoon for someone to give the keys to their Z06, sit down beside you, and tell you to see what she will do. Half way through the cruise he reaches over and cuts off the traction control and tells me to wind it up. Basically, I got to run around Northern Wake County working over this guys $50K car with him sitting beside me and encouraging me. It was great!
And you all need to quit bringing up C-5's & C-6's. Do you realize the agony you are putting us through? Some of us just want to finish(or finish off) a C-3. :(
I dare anyone to give me their keys to their C5/C6. I ain't coming back. Freebie!
I forgot to mention how awesome the brakes were. First few times I basically ate the windshield. By the time I got used to them, it was time to get back into my tired daily driver, and then I about ate the back of a few cars in traffic on the way back to my office!
They are so different, they are difficult to compare.
However, for just "slam you into the back of your seat" factor, I have to go with the BB. My motor was tired (it is now being rebuilt) and it still pulled harder than the Z06. Of course, that could also be an illusion given the quiet refinement of the Z06 vs. sweet music of the 35 year old BB.
The Z06 just did not seem to have a lot of low end grunt. That baby really lit up and took off at 3000RPM though. I did not really do any power launches, so I am sure you could work it over and get a better launch. But rolling it off the line and then jumping on it, I would give it to the BB.
I have driven my friends Z06 a couple of times and go riding in it often. The best thing in my opinion about that car is that it has all the creature comforts mine doesn't (A/C, working radio, working windsheild wipers, doesn't overheat in traffic :) ) and still gets over 25mpg and runs mid 12's in the 1/4. I really need to stop going for rides because I love that car. I can't wait until the prices come down to a range where I can afford one. Maybe the prices will hit rock bottom when the 2900lb C6 Z06 590HP comes out (dreaming). FYI, don't go to the C6 section, it will get you hooked on a new one.
Drove them and love em. Did you see that 03 Vette listed in the new Car and driver? 427ci, 500 HP no Super Charger (SC) etc. but at 102K a bit steep and I could have a SC with matching hood for under 10K making cost out the door under 60K for new C5.
