A knoking sound has started in the drivers side of the engine. It sound much like a hammer tapping a garage floor. Sometimes it is not very loud and others it is. If you hold the passengers side valve cover it fells smooth no abnormal vibrations but in the drivers side there is a continous knocking felt. When I rev it a little then it doesnt knock anymore. Could It be a lifter sticking??
Re: KNOCKING SOUND IN ENGINE????????????? (Corvettelvr73)
It could be anything from a lifter to rod bearings or a wrist pin. The easiest way to isolate the cylinder it's coming from is to pull the plug wires off one at a time. Crank the engine and see if the noise goes away or at least quiet's down a little bit if it quiet's down you have found the faulty cylinder. if this is the case you more than likely have a rod bearing or wrist pin problem.
But before you go to all this trouble make sure you don't have an exhaust leak, an exhaust leak can make some horrible noises and mislead you to thinking you have interanl engine troubles.
With the engine cool I would crank the motor and either tie a small piece of rag on a coat hanger and put it next to the exhaust manifolds to check for leaks when you find a leak you will see the rag move. Or you can use some soapy water and watch for bubbles.
If the rocker cover is vibrating, one or a couple of the rocker arms may be somehow contacting it and making the noise.
Remove the left, (driver's side) rocker (valve) cover, start it up and if the noise goes away, double gasket the cover and/or figure-out where the contact points are.

You can locate the sound by using an old broom stick as a stethoscope. Just put one end of the broomstick next to different parts of the block and heads and put your ear next to the other end.
I didn't notice if you have a automatic, but if a bolt backs off from the flex plate to the converter, it taps the block, and you can get a noise that sounds like a rod problem. Since it is located on one side only I doubt if it is in your water pump. However, water pumps can go out in a way that sounds like a rod problem.
