Default broken bolt

i was working on it the other day and low and behold i found that the bolt in the harmonic balancer was broken off. looking at the bolt it has been broke for awhile. probably was that way when i bought it. other than taking the motor out, can i drill and use a ezeout to get the bolt out or is there not enough room for that

If the balancer is not wobbleling around or moving in any way just leave it alone. A lot of early small blocks were a press fit with no bolt. Most however were drilled and tapped when in the machine shop. Just keep an eye on it.
If the balancer is loose remove it and see if you can get a vice grip on the remaining threads and cross your fingers.
Good luck

The dampner is keyed on the crank nose and very tight fit. Your lower pulleys bolt into the dampner and if they work it loose things could get messy. But it may stay on till overhaul time. Don't plan any long trips and buy good roadside coverage. :lurk:

You could probably get a right angle drill in there if you remove the fan shroud. Those bolts are quite hard and drilling will be difficult at best, you will probably want a cobalt drill bit and a lot of patience.

the center bolt is pretty good sized and you shoud be able to drill it out - start with a small left twist drill and make sure you are in the center -with a littte luck it will back out as you increase the drill size - dave
