Hay gang I have asked this before but with all the new people on the board I wanted to see what kind of input everyone has.
I got a quote from SAFELITE for $196. This includes a warranty and the peice of mind that if they break it going in it is up to them to replace it. They will also come to my house which is great seeing as the car doesn't run. Does anybody have experience with these guys?
Re: Windshield installation, DIY or farm out. (BlackRat)
I'm wrestling with this item for my daily driver.
89 Buick - and Safelite wants $350+ to install.
I have $250 deductible - and no-one has it under that.
$198 - really ? shaded ? tinted ?
BTW - looks like Safelite is one of the biggest nationwide firms.
But - who cares. It's the one guy in your driveway that's installing your WS.
Did he just start last month ? or does he have 10 yrs experience ? Who knows.
Re: Windshield installation, DIY or farm out. (BlackRat)
For that kind of coin I would farm it out, but........make sure you are there to watch the installer so that you can be assured that he puts the shims under the glass, and checks the fit of the trim before gluing the new glass down. I don't think most glass places understand the shim thing that well.

I'd farm out the front windshield without question. Though I've gotten a quote to remove and replace the rear glass for $200. A bit steep for me. Is it really that hard to remove it?

Re: Windshield installation, DIY or farm out. (BlackRat)
It only takes a small chip to ruin a windshield. Most auto glass shops will guarentee and install at your place. For a frame off resto you gotta go new. You might enquire as to the manufacture while you price shop. Buy american. :chevy
Re: Windshield installation, DIY or farm out. (BlackRat)
I've heard they can blow out during a high speed run if everything isn't just right. I have always been a little afraid to do this myself. Just my opinion, but go with the guy who will give you a warranty.
Re: Windshield installation, DIY or farm out. (BlackRat)
Thanks guys I think that I will definately have someone else do it.
Looks like you've made your decision, so I don't need to go into a longwinded explanation of the windshield removal and installation process which would probably change your mind if you were still considering doing it yourself.
