Default melted poly engine mounts !

Hi
Just as a warning.
A friend has a 66 big block vintage racing car.
He saw that his exhaust was somehow wrinkled ( headers ) and after extensive trouble shooting, he found his newly installed poly engine mounts melted and therefore the engine dropped a fair bit.
I thought that poly is top rocket age material ??
Any thoughts ?
See you Gunther :seeya

yeah, it's pretty good stuff but won't stand up to extreme heat.

It's benefits are high tensile strenght, high burst strength and excellent tear resistance. Another benefit is ït's flex life, it can withstand millions of flexes without loss of properties, it's very chemical resistant and abrasive resistant too. It also has good "elastic memory"/recovery. It can withstand continuous exposure to heat of about 220F so if your headers are close by, wrap them.

"It can withstand continuous exposure to heat of about 220F"

So if the engine overheats, they are toast!

do you continuously overheat the engine?  220F or so is the softening point, it takes some more heat for a longer period to actually melt the urethane. Furthermore, if you overheat the engine the upper part, maybe 1/3 max will get that hot (cylinder heads and upper part of cylinder), the block itself will not get near as hot.

YES, I do overheat my engine a lot. What do we really mean by overheat. The normal operting range is 180 to 230 degrees. Attending driving schools can push temps as high as 260 degrees. Most C3s overheat when pushed. I would rather go with a solid metal engine mount than go half way with a plastic one.

The point is that there are a lot of aftermarket parts out there that are engineered incorrectly and are not robust. See threads on braided SS brake lines, are you helping performance and reliability or hurting????
