Now that the headers are installed, I will be heading to the muffler shop. In addition, I want to have a cross-over pipe added.
My question is where should I put it? I want to make sure that it's location will not cause problems with transmission removal and installation, when I swap to a 200R4 later this year.
My car is a stick so I ended up having the crossover put in front of the crossmember. With an automatic you won't have enough room so it should go behind the crossmember. Here's a pic.
I located mine back by the rear spring mount. Could have easily been an X pipe too. The H or X pipe will make or break the way you love your mufflers. My car was extremely loud and it mellowed it out enough for the neighbors to like me again.
Do the tranny first! I made the mistake of doing it the other way around...
By the way, my pipe is right up front where the pipes curve down from the manifold. $30 to get the job done. BTW, the pipe doesn't have to be as big as the others.
Because exhaust gasses cool rapidly (and decrease in volume as a result) as they travel though the system, the benefit of the crossover dimenishes the father downstream it's placed. That's why placing mufflers at the end of the exhaust system is preferable to being placed farther upstream if the vehicle desing allows it. Personally, I chose not to run a cross over due to the added hassle, weight, and cost. While I recognize that they can improve low end torque and smooth out my ehaust tones, I don't need more low end torque and I like the sound of my exhaust as it is.
As you probably figured out from al the other posts...the closer to the front the better. Mine is auto and I put an "H" pipe just behind the cross member. The car is still loud as heck! But I like it!
