Default BRAKE PROBLEMS

HELP!!!!!

My brake light comes on when I depress the brake pedal. I just bought the car, and the light was not on during the test rides and ferry home.

My safety inspection said that the pads were at 50%, but the brake is very soft and travels way too much.

Can any of you experts point me in the right direction???

First thing I would do is check the fluid and fill it up if it needs some

The fluid is up........

I don't think it is the master cylinder due to it not bleeding down, there just isn't much resistance at all....

The light is turned on by a couple of things, but in your case it most likely is a leak somewhere as you say the pedal is soft.. If the switch detects a differential pressure between the front and the rear the light will turn on. Look closley at the calipers and fluid on the tires after the car sets for a while. Another thing to look for is rusted through brake lines. ANY loss of brake fluid will trip the switch. Once you corect the problem, it should reset.

Check to see if you have a caliper leaking.

I had the same problem when I bought my vette. It turns out the caliper was cracked, flud leaking, and the brake lines were never bled. Hope this helps.

Mike, check my post...

I have had the same problem for 2 years...

Replaced the master, bled the brakes and still the same problem.
One caliper is probably bad and cannot be bled fully, so decided to do them all. Will let you know the outcome...

Make sure they are bled properly after installation, and make sure your master cylinder is working properly, if not, replace it... :yesnod:

Had the same problem,

Mine turned out to be the master cylinder although they can leak through the calipers. Changed the calipers, master cylinder and installed Braided hoses.
Probably only needed to change the master cylinder but hey!... While I'm at it. :banghead:

I think we all waste some cash occasionally...missed diagnosis...but brakes is an area where it is OK to overdo it... :steering:

I'll change the master cylinder if the calipers don't do the trick. It is a safety issue that I would prefer to know that I have good equipment......just like having good tires!!

Hope my wife never finds out how much I am spending!!!!

If your not leaking fluid and not getting air from your calipers when bleeding but still have a mushy pedal then change your rubber brake lines. The inner liner can rupture and allow fluid to fill the cavity between the inner and outer sleeves reducing the volume to the calipers. Sometimes the outer liner will swell but not always.
Stock rubber lines cost about $15 a piece (cheap insurance since rubber was not designed to last forever). Teflon/kevlar/stainless braided are the way to go if you never want to replace them again and originality is not a factor.

If your worried about your wife and spending money on a c-3, you may want to take the time now to set-up a Swiss bank account. :D

Mike,
I don't know if this applies since we're talking about brakes.. BUT. Since you just got the car you have to do the 2 month cooling off period..
You'll be dumping money left and right into your ride before you know it..
Try to determine the problem before buying parts to fix it.. That's half the fun of owning the car..

If you just had a saftey inspection and they said you had 50% pad life then they took off the tires and inspected the brakes and calipers. I would think they would have told you if they saw a leaking caliper or you would see fluid on the tire/ground if you had a leak in the system. Your reservior would be low as well. Mushy pedal could be nothing more than air in the sytem. Gravity bleed the calipers you have first.. I'm not saying that 4 new calipers isn't a good thing.. but try to figure out what's wrong first.. Good luck!
