clutch fan
Does anyone know the correct way to check a clutch fan. I have a 77 vette and suspect that the clutch on the does not turn freely enough contributing to poor gas milage. :cry

FWIW, the Haynes manual states:
Begin the clutch check with a lukewarm engine (start it when cold and let it run for two minutes only).
Remove the key from the ignition for safety purposes.
Turn the fan blades and note the resistance. There should be moderate resistance, depending on temperature.
Drive the vehicle until the engine is warmed up. Shut it off and remove the key.
Turn the blades and again note the resistance. There should be a noticeable increase in resistance.
If the fan clutch fails this check or is locked up, replacement is required. If excessive fluid is leaking from the hub or lateral play over 1/4" is noted, replace the clutch.

I have always heard to spin the fan after the engine is not running, and if it does not stop immediately then the clutch is bad.

I believe mine is starting to freeze up allot of resistance when cold I haven't checked it hot yet I will check it this afternoon and let you know!
