L-46 engine install question
My 69 L-46 (originally) non A/C coupe has a NOM. I will soon be removing this motor and will replace it with a rebuilt "010" small block. The machinist is done with the block and I plan to pick it up and bring it to the garage this weekend.
Since I plan to rebuild to stock specifications, I have purchased all of the parts necessary to recreate a 69 L-46. Although I will be reusing the original exhaust manifold, valve covers and distributor, everything else on the block will be new. I have purchased new ignition shielding, heat shields, etc (the original shielding was lost when they pulled the engine back in the 70s).
It seems to me that it would be a lot easier to completely assemble the block, including the exhaust manifold, and all shielding and ignition wires prior to dropping it into the car.
Also, since I do not have an original block to compare, I am wondering if anyone can help with instructions/photos of the locations of the various wire brackets, clips and fastners for the ignition wires/shielding. I do have an assembly manual, but find it rather vague as to exact placement of these items.
Thanks.
Mark
I would agree with you... Much easier to have the heat shields, lower ignition shielding, and plug wires installed. As was noted in the other section, I'd leave the distributor, carburetor, alternator, and A.I.R. pump off until the engine was reinstalled (although I would probably have the brackets installed)... It is relatively easy to install those items after the engine is back in place and eliminates the possibility of damage.
Unfortunately, there's a lot of "stuff" hanging off of a small block... Take your time and study the manual. With the engine out of the car it should be relatively easy to test fit parts to see how they line up.
