Fitting Electric door locks
I've been trying to fit after market electric door locks to my '79, but i'm not sure where is the best place to connect the servo to the lock mechanisim for optimum leverage?
Can anyone tell me where the 'factory fitted' electric door lock servos are fitted? .. maybe even a diagram???
..also, with the factory fitted items, if the battery runs flat, can the locks still be opened from outside manually, with the key?
... with my first attempt at fitting the servos, it was almost impossible to turn the key and unlock the door if the battery wasn't connected.
Has anyone else tried this?
The actuators i've been trying to fit were 'cannibalised' from another car and are of the solenoid type, rather than the motor type..... i have a feeling that the motor type would be a safer bet, though i'm not sure what was fitted as standard.
I'm wondering if the factory system was an 'add on' to the manual lock set up... or if it was a completely different arrangement?

Thanks for the pictures.
Are these of an earlier (than '79) car?..... as my control rods are on the 'inside' of the door.
Does anyone know if this is the same position that the factory actuators are fitted?? ... has anyone got a workshop manual diagram maybe?
.... and to re-iterate my earlier question... on the factory electric lock system, can you still open the locks manually from the outside (with the key) when the battery is dead?
..... a really odd question i know, but i do have a good reason for asking, trust me!
go on chaps... disconnect you battery and try it for me! :yesnod:

I liked the way that Smokehouse69 attached his directly to the elbow rather than the rod. My actuator needs more space below and would not have fit behind the door panel if I had connected as he did.
The kit I'm using came with a wiring harness. Other than the connections on the switches and actuators all you had to do was find constant power and a ground.

... do your locks work on a remote control (from outside) or with the door key? ... i think the factory locks have a switch on the locking barrel?

I have a keyless entry system that these will eventually hook into. They will not tie into the door key locking mechanism. I have been rebuilding the window regulators while the doors are open. One at a time so I can drive the car. That is until I ran into a braking problem and took the car to the shop this weekend.
In two weekends we have a road trip planned with 12 or 14 vettes attending. After that I will be pulling the other door panel off, installing and making sure the electric door locks work manually and then hooking up to the keyless entry.
Have you though through the manual lock switches yet. I placed one in the old door panel that I am going to be replacing and wasn't really happy. They are too big.

I've been inside the doors a few times trying to mount acuators to the rods, but they wouldn't budge the lock at all, so i'm looking for another way to mount the actuator.
yep, it is gonna be a bit of a squeeze to get the actuator inside... i'll let you know how it goes.
As for the switches, i was thinking of using something like the factory switches mounted in the door..... although, i've just been looking at lock kits on the internet, and there are some which don't require switches, so i might go for somethng like that.
