Default Gear Ratio Change

I am going to upgrade my differential to either a 3:55 or 3:70 later in the year. Where is the best place to buy the ring and pinion sets? I am just going to install and set up myself. This will have to be an improvement over the stock gearing. Any tips for doing this?

Thanks in advance for your help

Please realize that the set-up tolerances are very precise and critical. You need acurate dial indicators and depth gauges. If you don't get it exactly correct you will ruin the new gears even by driving only a few miles and they will be noisey even if you re-do it correctly. I say this not knowing you ability so please don't take offense if you are capable of doing the job. BTW.. I have 3.55's in my 69 and I really like them. I think 3.70's would be a little too low if you do much hiway driving though. I run 3,000 @ 70mph.

Thanks for the input, no offense taken. My ability is endless. There is nothing that we can't fix that comes into our shop. We farm for a living, so we generally work on much larger equipment and we hire nothing done. If we don't know how to fix it, we learn.

I think I agree with you, 3:55 would be a great choice

Summit Racing has Richmond gears for $268 or so. Since i have a O/D tranny, I went with 3.90. What trans are you runnin, and do you know what yur current rear gear ratio is?

Most of you should get Chevy Corvette gears.

I feel the same way. I try to NEVER hire anything done. I'd rather spend the money on a tool if that's what it takes. Lots of places can't even change oil without screwing something up or trying to sell you something you don't need. You know the routine I'm sure.
