Can I get by without a heat riser??
I want the car to be original but it is turning into a money pit. My wife is about to barf everytime she hears me on the phone to NAPA or other vendors. I have been working all things in the engine compartment. When I removed the right exhaust manifold to replace it with a matching number manifold, I removed the heart riser and noted that it had a crack on one side. It has been welded (repaired once by a previous owner). Can it be welded again perhaps? Sooooo, can I get by without a heat riser? I only drive the car on nice days and weekends, not much at all during the winters. I don't care about a fast warm up and besides, it would be nice if the intake manifold retained it's new coat of paint instead of getting burnt by the crossover porting. It's $40 I need to spend on other things for the car!

Should be no problem without a heat riser, especially given your driving habits. I probably owned my vette for over a year before I even learned what a heat riser was and where it was supposed to be and that I did not have one! You will need a spacer to take the place of the heat riser so that the exhaust pipe fits properly. The catalogs sell the spacers for about $20 but somebody posted that you can buy one from a parts store (Napa?) that fits fine and costs a lot less. MJ
