I've owned my '69 BB for 5 months now. It has a properly working power steering system in it, but I must say that the steering feel is a bit vague. The suspension is set up to handle well, and after recently adding the 17" rubber it handles much better... but the steering is just so-so. It's easy to steer, which is nice I guess, but again its best classified as soft and vague.
Does anyone make a quality manual rack out there? Pricing?
And if I did this, could I then run tall BB valve covers to fit roller rockers in the future?
Yes, some are overboosted. My 77 ps has great feel, etc.
Needs nothing & no plans to change.
The ps can be modified for more feel. Markus (zwede) modified his stock 71 setup to be better.
You can also send your control valve to Vette Brakes & Products and request that it be rebuilt with a heavier preload spring. They may even sell you the special spring and you could rebuild the valve if you feel ambitious. The phone number for the Sales Dept is 1-800-237-9991. Ask for a rebuild kit with a 55 lb spring. You could also ask for their Tech Dept.
With the steroids, you don't need to run power. I only suggest this as you are asking for a "quality manual rack". It is pretty pricey (my opinion), but is the only "kit" available. Gene (mrvette) may have some other ideas.
Or you could take the control valve apart and rebuild it with the heavier spring or just install some washers at the end of the spring to increase the pre load. I think both are included in the control valve rebuild kit. I did mine, it was easy. Never did try messing with the preload tho, just tore it all out and started on completely custom steering setup.
