Can us 81 Owners with the "computer" set the Curb Idle timing to 36 Degrees with a Adjustable Timing Light . Plus does the Vacuum need to be unplugged when doing this . I have a after market chip in the computer . Just had a Senior moment and can't think of the chip name Hyper Tech or something like that .

You can set you timing up a little and not have any problems. The computer controls all of the timing, you don't have mechanical or vacuum advance. TO set the timing, the instructions are on you emmisions label (should be on the underside of the hood) If you don't have that you need to disconnect the 4 wire connector on the distributor, then set timing to 6 degrees. I think I have heard you can set it as high as 15 degrees and pick up some power, but make sure you listen for pinging and adjust accordingly.

There is NO vacuum line to plug on a stock 1981 distributer set up, as has been said, the computer performs all of the spark advance functions, and all you can adjust is advance at idle.
Ken,
As stated above for timing alterations. Make sure you unplug the wires as said (if you unplug the wrong connector the engine won't run) & get the idle down to 600rpm (Auto, not sure for manual, 700rpm???). Then adjust to what feels good. I've got a Hypertech chip fitted & set my base timing to 11BTDC & it made a difference in that pick up is better, it feels more responsive & low end power was boosted. Not sure what the max safe advance is (depends on fuel quality, altitude, CR...) but mine ran well at 12BTDC (I backed it off just to be on the safe side).

disconnect the tan wire coming from the HEI this is the EST bypass so you will see base timing only. Also make sure there's no knock or it'll retard the timing.
