I need to "adjust" my transmission over a little bit so that the u-joint does not hit the transmission tunnel. When I do this it will put the transmission mount in a bind and its life expectancy will be nill. Does anyone make a solid transmission mount or will I have to make one myself?
I agree with THE DUDE. It is manditory that you have front solid engine mounts to run a solid trans mount. If you try, you will break the tail housing for sure! Thad :iagree:
:iagree: From a physics point of view I definitely would agree. If your motor mounts allow flex, but not your tranny mount then you will probably make things worse since the whole engine/tranny assembly will then be applying a great deal of leverage on that tranny mount. If the mount is solid, then you will probably either shatter your bell housing or shear your tail housing...or both...neither will be a pretty sight. The engine/tranny assembly is held in place at three points. These three points are the two motor mounts and the tranny mount. All three work together and should be made of the same material, and have the same freedom of movement in order to properly balance the assembly. With that in mine I suppose it would be fine to have solid motor mounts while keeping the flexible tranny mount, but this is due to the location of the two motor mounts in relation to the tranny mount.
Oh heck...did I jabber on again...sorry. :conehead
Seems you have an alignment problem. Could it be that the problem's root cause is in the motor mounts? ... might they have broken/separated? If so, that could also cause the trans tailshaft to shift out of proper alignment. I don't recommend a solid trans or motor mount for a car that is regularly & routinely driven on street. I think you'd end up cracking something. Just two weeks ago I saw the result of a broken solid trans mount ... on a 180 hp mini-stock ... when the mount broke, it allowed tailshaft to swing too far ... tailshaft housing broke slap in two. BTW, this car also had solid motor mounts that did not break. It appears his solid trans mount broke from vibration/torque stress.
Well it looks like I might have some problems then. However, I do not have an alignment problem. I am putting a 73 Muncie gearbox with a Gear Vender's overdrive unit in the car. The U-joint rubs the transmission tunnel on the pass side a little. I need to move the tranny over about 3/8" so it will clear. I have already cut a lot of the tranny tunnel out of the way to get the overdrive unit in place and I don't want to cut any more out or I will weaken the seat belt anchor point. I have made a new transmission mount/crossmenber and I have the holes in it to locate the tranny where it needs to be. I am just afraid that even with the poly style tranny mount that it will only take a few miles and the mount will break because of the initial stress I am placing on it.
